DIY Craft: Bird Seed Hangers

As you know, we recently started a Pinterest account where we've been posting and repinning things that are interesting to us (food, pretty things, humorous things, etc!).  Today, we found this wonderful DIY project compliments of Intimate Weddings.

These bird seed wedding favor hearts are a simple and affordable way to thank guests and feed the birds!  Aside from wedding favors, this is a fun, affordable & eco-friendly craft project to take on with the kids.

What You'll Need for 21 two inch hearts:

-3/4 cup flour
-1/2 cup water
-2.5 teaspoons unflavored gelatin
-3 tbsp corn syrup
-4 cups birdseed

And...

-large mixing bowl
-cookie cutter
-nonstick spray
-chopstick (for making hole in the ornament)
-parchment paper
-cookie sheet
-jute

Ready, Set Go!

1. Spray inside of your cookie cutter with vegetable cooking spray or wipe down with vegetable oil.

2.  Mix  flour, water, gelatin, corn syrup, and birdseed in large bowl.  Place cookie cutter on a parchment lined cookie sheet.  Put mixture inside of cookie cutter (be sure to press mixture firmly down in order to reduce the shedding of seeds).

3. Using a chopstick (this will give you an excuse to order Chinese!) and make a hole near the top of the shape.

4. Remove chopstick and carefully pull out the cookie cutter from the birdseed shape.  Repeat until all of the mixture is gone. To ensure that the cookie cutter doesn't stick to the birdseed mix, we recommended that you spray the cutter after every six shapes or so.

5. Let the mixture shape dry overnight.  Then cut 10-12 inches of jute for each shape.  String jute through hole and hang!  Add thank you tags or other sayings on the tag for a personalized hanger gift or favor.
